就如一般的新加坡人,我是爱吃的,虽然我吃得不多,但只要是美食,还是难以抗拒的。

Having stayed in an area which is known for it’s food for close to 9 years, it’s amazing that I rarely have my meals nearby. The number of times I have actually dined in the restaurants in this area is, perhaps, countable by fingers and toes.

One of the “treasures” in the area is the Big Ben’s Pies. Hidden among the rows of houses, the place doesn’t seem to be a popular eating place. After all, it’s quite ulu and I wonder who will travel all the way to dine. But alas, how wrong I was.

Apparently, the place is quite well-known for it’s British pies. Though it’s only less than 5 mins walk from my house, I have only tried them thrice. As this is the first British pie I have tried, I’m not sure if it’s the authentic British pie. Nonetheless, I have tried the Steak and Mushroom pie and it tastes quite decent and it’s not too salty. The crust is crispy enough and it’s neither too thick nor too thin. There is a decent amount of filling, though mainly mushroom. Despite the relatively little meat, the paste, that is mixed with the beef and mushroom, has a strong beef taste to make up for it. And it smells nice too.

Another dish I like that can be found nearby (not so nearby actually) is 肉骨茶. Though it’s one of the popular dishes in this region, it was never on the list of food that I crave, until I had my first taste of it, from this stall. Since then, I have kept a lookout for good Bak Kut Tehs, but few taste as good as this. Tucked in a coffee shop in the midst of HDB blocks, it relocated twice since I first frequented, but each time, I have managed to find it again =) The 肉骨茶 from this stall claims to be from 巴生, Malaysia, and it’s the brownish kind, unlike the pale-yellowish and peppery soup (claimed to be the local version of the delicacy) served by some stalls. Though the soup does not have an overwhelming smell (but it does smell nice nonetheless), it is in fact quite rich, with a distinct taste of Chinese Herbs. As compared with most other soups that come with the ribs only, this soup contains pork ribs, vegetables, 豆干 and 油条. Each individual serving comes with 4 pork ribs. The ribs were tender and rather juicy and the meat could be removed easily from the bones. The stall has other dishes as well, but I have never tried them before.
