On the papers recently was the news that Dennis Rodman will be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame this summer. Dennis Rodman. One-of-a-kind player. Though he is not a shooter like Michael Jordan or a the “sidekick” like Scottie Pippen, his defensive work made him stand out. The way he rebounded and harassed opponents was amazing. Many teams, including Utah Jazz in the 1997 & 1998, could testify.
Those were the days watching the NBA games. I remembered started watching the games in June 1993, when I was stuck at home, down with chichen pox. With my dad a big basketball fan and the then SBC offering live telecast, I sat in front of the TV watching 10 guys and a ball. The game was the finals between the Chicago Bulls and Phoenix Suns, or some people would say Michael Jordan vs Charles Barkley. It was when I was instantly captivated by the Chicago Bulls. The movement and the passing of the team, as wells as the camaraderie between the players were pleasing on the eye. How fortunate was I to witness the last of the first Chicago Bulls first 3-peat.
My favourite Chicago Bulls team was the 1996 one, with Jordan’s first full season out from retirement and the inclusion of Rodman. That team was simply fantastic and quite unbeatable and the regular season record of 72-10 speaks for itself. This also marked the start of another 3-peat. I fondly remembered that Steve Kerr shot in the 1997 finals. I vividly remembered that Jordan’s final shot as a Bulls player in the 1998 finals. I clearly remembered being downcast when the good things have to come to an end.
Since the Chicago Bulls dynasty, no team has come close to them in my opinion. San Antonio Spurs are efficient, but not attractive. LA Lakers are good, but not great. The main reason for me supporting the Lakers is Phil Jackson, the then-Chicago Bulls head coach and one of the best all time.
No team currently has such a balanced combination of players as the Chicago Bulls back then. Not only was the first team superb both offensively and defensively, the guys coming off the bench were good as well (Toni Kukoč, Steve Keer and co). NBA has never been the same without them.
