EQ、IQ, 两个在现今社会不可缺少的两样东西。

Being paper-smart these days can only get hold of a job, but in order to be successful, it is increasingly important to be people-smart as well. Having high EQ is never easy. In fact, I think it is more difficult to obtain than a high IQ. EQ is not about formulas, or standards answers; it depends on the situation at hand. Even very smart people can have low EQ as well.

EQ, according to the talk I attended yesterday, is about being intelligent about your emotions and being intelligently emotional. Chim huh… There are just times when we lose their heads and react stupidly; there are just times when we just do not know how we should react; there are also times when we say that that should not be said or do not say things that should be said.

There are supposedly 15 competencies to EQ: self regard, emotional self-awareness, assertiveness, independence, self actualisation, empathy, social responsibility, interpersonal relationships, stress tolerance, impulse control, reality testing, flexibility, problem solving, optimism and happiness.

I find it quite amazing that humans never fail to model things, by putting them in some framework. All along, I thought that EQ is more of an art. I guess it’s just humans, who will try to “scientify” everything.

Hmm.. Being intelligent about your emotions and being intelligently emotional is tough. And it sounds quite fake too… In any case, the first step to be EQ-smart, based on the speaker, is to take back the ownership of our feelings; we shall dictate how we feel instead of the events around us. I guess it’s true.. Why let others lead how we feel? But it’s really easier said than done, especially when we are greatly affected by the events around us. Perhaps, practise makes perfect. But will there be a lot of bumps along the way??

The “in” thing in the past used to be IQ, then EQ. Now there’s AQ (Autism-Spectrum Quotient). What’s next? BBQ?? Hahahha
